Please
review information about
SOE master's degree programs
at: http://soe.binghamton.edu/academics/master.html prior
to inquiring about or applying
to any programs in the School
of Education.
The School of Education focuses
on the post-baccalaureate preparation
of pre-service and in-service teachers.
Along with all other graduate education
programs in New York state, it was
required to re-register its degree
programs with the New York State
Education Department in the spring
of 2001.
Let's
clarify some terms and names:
Pre-service programs are
for students who do not have
an undergraduate degree in
education or initial certification
to teach. Pre-service programs
are offered in Childhood Education,
Inclusive Childhood Education
and Adolescence Education in
Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science,
English, Mathematics, Physics
and Social Studies.
In-service programs are
for students who DO have an
undergraduate degree in education
and provisional certification
or a certificate of qualification
to teach. In-service programs
are offered in Adolescence
Education, Childhood Education,
Literacy Education and Special
Education.
Adolescence Education is
the a name for what we used
to call Secondary Education.
We offer pre-service and
in-service programs in Adolescence
Education in the subject
areas of Biology, Chemistry,
Earth Science, English, Mathematics,
Physics and Social Studies.
The pre-service program in
Adolescence Education is
the Master of Arts in Teaching
degree. The in-service program
in Adolescence Education
is the Master of Science
in Education degree. (Courses
in Adolescence Education
carry the prefix "SEC.").
Childhood Education is
the name for what we used
to call Elementary Education.
We offer a pre-service program
and an in-service program
in Childhood Education. Applicants
will need to indicate on
the application the program
to which they are applying.
The programs in Childhood
Education prepare students
for teaching in grades 1-6.
(Courses in Childhood Education
carry the prefix "ELED."). Please
Note: The Childhood
Program has its own distinctive
requirements for application,
outlined just below.
Inclusive Childhood Education is
a pre-service program that
prepares students to teach
childhood education and special
education in grades 1-6, and
leads to certification in both
fields. Please Note:
The Inclusive Childhood Program
has its own distinctive requirements
for application, outlined just
below.
Literacy Education The
degrees in Literacy Education
are: Literacy
Education (Birth-Grade 6)
and Literacy Education
(Grades 5-12). These are in-service
programs for students who are
already certified.
Applicants will need to indicate
on the application the program
to which they are applying.
Master
of Science in Educational Studies This
program is designed for those
interested in studying education,
but who do not seek teaching
certification in an area
offered by SUNY-Binghamton.
Special Education has
two in-service programs
focusing on different grade
levels: Childhood (grades
1-6) and Adolescence (grades
7-12). These programs are
for teachers who already
have initial certification
in Childhood Education
(grades 1-6) or in Adolescence
Education (grades 7-12)
in English, Mathematics,
Science, or Social Studies.
Applicants can only be
admitted to the program
that corresponds to the
age group of their general
education certificate.
These programs are also
open to applicants who
hold a “provisional” certificate
in Special Education (grades
K-12). (New York State
no longer grants K-12 Special
Education certificates.)
Teachers from other fields
(e.g., technology, health)
and other professions (e.g.,
speech therapy, human services)
would apply to the Educational
Studies program.
